NBT Solutions is working closely with the New England Fiber Company to provide an online mapping service that enables fiber optic providers to locate customers and determine the best method for providing services to these customers. FiberLocator, a GIS-based web application, contains the location and description of fiber optic assets from over 150 different fiber carriers within the US. The application is provided to users on a subscription basis and supports a general set of GIS tools, including pan and zoom, zoom to area, interactive distance measurement, feature information queries (i.e. info tool) and printing. Users can quickly locate customers based on address and see what dark fiber assets and lit buildings are within proximity a location. A custom dynamic legend component limits the legend display to only the line layers that are in the current map view - allowing the uses to quickly filter out relevant fiber assets.

FiberLocator was developed using open source standards and tools, including OpenLayers, ExtJs, MapServer, and PostGres/PostGIS. All data is served using Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards, including Web Mapping Services (WMS), Web Feature Services (WFS) and Web Coverage Services (WCS). The application supports geocoding of addresses and detailed basemap coverages using Bing Maps API.
